Greenwood Park SAPS maps crime patterns
Police have warned the community of crime 'hotspots' in the Greenwood Park policing district.
FOLLOWING reports of a spike in crime north of Durban, the Greenwood Park SAPS created a map of sorts to warn the community of crime ‘hotspots’.
W/O Leon Audh, spokesman for the station, said there were certain areas that were more prone to specific forms of crime and the intention of the ‘map’ was to warn people to remain vigilant in those targeted areas.
He said house robberies and break-ins were rampant along Cyprus Road, Effingham Road, Harrison Drive, Ramchand Road, Avoca Road, Buttery Road, Acutt Avenue, Browns Drift and Umhlangeni Road.
“We urge the community in these areas to take extra precaution by keeping their windows closed at all times, to activate their alarm systems and to limit visibility into their homes,” he said.
Businesses on Columbine Road, Inanda Road, Peters Road, Old North Coast Road and Sea Cow Lake Road are urged to upgrade their security measures and also to take extra precautions as authorities have noted an increase in business robberies in these areas, said Audh.
Drug dealing hotspots include Quarry Heights Drive and Kwazinkwali Road.
Pedestrians travelling along Umhlangeni Road, North Coast Road and Blackburn Road are often targeted by armed robbers and stripped of their belongings, said Audh. He urged people to walk in groups and to keep cell phones and other items of value hidden.
What’s more, Audh said these roads, along with Queen Nandi Drive, were also hijacking hotspots. “We urge motorists to drive with their widows wound up and not to drive with any valuables in plain sight,” he said.
