UPDATE: North Coast Road chaos finally cleared

Police were forced to use stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

THE havoc on North Coast Road was finally cleared at around 7pm, but not before a 30-year-old taxi driver sustained minor injuries when police were forced to fire stun grenades to disperse the crowd, said Kyle van Reenen of Crisis Medical.

From around 4pm this afternoon, two rival taxi associations blocked off the busy road in Durban North in what was believed to be clash over taxi routes.

North Coast Road, Blackburn Road, Umgeni Road as well as Riverside Road were gridlocked for hours.

Van Reenen said the injured taxi owner’s private security would not allow the paramedics to treat him at the scene and he was privately transported to a nearby hospital.
