Wally’s 60th birthday wish comes true

His birthday wish was simple, the response however, was incredible.

WHEN Wally Luyt was drafting his invitation cards for his 60th birthday, he decided instead of birthday gifts, he wanted to give back to charity. The uMhlanga resident sent out his invitation asking his friends and family to raise funds for the Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation on his special day.

The response was overwhelming with Wally and his friends raising R22 000 for the organisation. His invitation read, “if you are thinking of getting something for an old guy who has everything nothing would make me happier than a donation to Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation”.

The foundation was started in 2012 as an awareness initiative to educate and encourage others to survive and has a number of projects.

“My wife, Michelle, who is part of the foundation went through cancer and I was astounded by how amazing Pink Phoenix were, especially in their support. I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the journey of the foundation and over the years it’s just done amazing charity work.

“So it was an easy decision for me to raise funds on my 60th birthday. I certainly didn’t expect what I eventually handed over, which was a cheque for R22 000. I’m blown away by the gestures and support of my friends and family,” he said.

Sharon van Straaten, founder of the foundation, praised Wally’s efforts.

“Wally’s huge personality and kind heart inspired all his friends to dig deep and raised a whopping R22 250 in aid of the Kids 4 Life Initiative. I just wanted to thank Wally and his friends for their generosity, kindness and support of Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation,” she said.
