UPDATE: An ‘earful’ of positive news for Dino

Veterinary treatment has saved the ears of Dino, the mange-riddled hound rescued from Shakaskraal.

ANIMAL activist, Gianna Scoulelis, announced some positive news yesterday, following the recent rescue of Dino, the mange-riddled dog from Shakaskraal.

Not only has the sores on his skin begun to heal and his fur started to grow back, but veterinarians were able to spare his badly infected ears with treatment, she said.

In recent weeks, Dino’s recovery nearly took a setback when veterinarians considered amputating his ears due to the severity of the mange and skin infections.

Shortly after his rescue, Scoulelis, who is also the founder of Animally Haven, told the Northglen News that his was one of the worst cases of animal abuse that she had seen in her 20 years of activism.

After months of failed attempts, Scoulelis finally managed to capture the deteriorating pup. At the time he was not only extremely emaciated, covered in ticks, mites, fleas and sarcoptic mange, but he was also riddled with pressure sores. His tail was even chopped off, she added.

Scoulelis, said she believed his owner moved and simply left him to fend for himself.

“I first spotted him in the area five months ago. He was healthy with a beautiful black coat. And then recently I noticed him getting thinner and losing his fur, so I began putting out food to gain his trust and rescue him. However, it has been a long struggle to capture him,” she said.
