Firwood Road to receive massive upgrade

Commuters have been urged to remain patient and calm while the 300-metre construction process is being completed.

A MASSIVE overhaul of the road infrastructure has recently begun for a section of Firwood Road in Greenwood Park.

The upgrade, which is estimated to last three months, will see 300 to 400 metres of the residential road being widened.

According to ward councillor, Deochand Ganesh, excavation has already begun.

The aim of the planned construction, he said, was also to straighten the road, removing all the blind corners from the roadway. There has been several ‘close shaves’ in terms of serious accidents, he added.

“Construction workers are in the process of digging up and relocating various infrastructure, such as electricity and telephone wires as well as water pipes, to make way for the broadened roadway and the new servitude,” he said.

Ganesh said the road was in dire need of the upgrade, as it hadn’t received any major service in over a decade. To date, municipal workers have only patched up potholes that have been reported along the roadway.

“The delay in the upgrade had been primarily due to budgetary constraints. The plan is to eventually attend the entire roadway,” he said.

A stop-and-go system will be implemented to assist with the traffic flow throughout the construction process.

Ganesh urged commuters to extend patience and courtesy when travelling along Firwood Road.

A symilar extention is also planned for Umhlanga Rocks Drive, which will see the busy road extended into four lanes.
