More complications emerge after voter registration

Some residents received messages claiming that while they appeared on the voting roll, their addresses might not be correctly reflected.

ALTHOUGH 4 000 people were able to successfully re-register in uMhlanga and Durban North over the weekend, mass confusion erupted after some residents began receiving messages claiming that while they appeared on the roll, their addresses might not be correctly reflected.

These people, said Durban North councilor Shaun Ryley, were urged to visit their voting stations to verify and/or rectify any issues.

IEC staff were as confused and did not know whether to let the public fill in their addresses directly on the roll or to re-register by filling in and submitting the REC form,” he added.

Ryley said people had to register within the voting districts in which they lived, as this mitigated the possibility of people from outside of the district affecting a fair result.

A second registration weekend is expected to take place in April.

The councillor once again assured the public that they are currently not required to provide proof of residence when registering.

Ryley encouraged the public to check their registration information by SMSing their ID number to 32810 or by going online to https://me.da.org.za.
