Durban North residents march against cell towers

The community has continued to campaign against the construction of cell towers in residential areas with a peaceful march.

DURBAN North residents took to the streets early this morning in a peaceful march to once again highlight their objections to the planned cell phone tower on Chelsea Drive.

Approximately 20 residents marched along Swapo (Broadway) Road, Adelaide Thambo ( Kensington) Drive and Kenneth Kaunda (Northway) Road from 10am to 11am waving placards and interacting with their fellow community members.

Monique Peterson, one of the residents involved in the march said their objections were not against cell phones or towers in general, but they are against the erection of cell towers in residential areas.

“We are saying, ‘let’s be wise about what we do with these radio frequency (RF) signals’, which has by numerous studies been proven to be harmful to humans and animals and lets consider alternative locations or means,” she said.

In February the residents in the vicinity of Chelsea Drive began actively campaigning against MTN and the construction of the tower.
