SINCE its launch in March last year, the glass-recycling depot on Lagoon Drive has been well-supported by the community. To date, 11 419 kilograms of glass has been dropped off at the bins situated at the outside the Umhlanga Country Club.
However, in January the depot saw the biggest donation, with 1 840 kilograms of glass being collected from the bins. As more and more people learn the importance of recycling as concerns over global warming and pollution increase, residents in uMhlanga and the communities north of Durban have embraced the eco-friendly way of life.
The relatively new depot joins nine other glass-recycling depots launched throughout Durban in 2014, some of which are located in uMhlanga, Durban North and La Lucia.
Despite these banks already being situated in the area, the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) received an overwhelming number of calls enquiring about recycling depots, said member, Dewet Geldenhys.
“We decided to start off with a glass recycling drop-off point on Lagoon Drive, and our ultimate goal is to expand it to include paper, plastic and aluminium facilities,” he added.
With development planned in the area, Geldenhys said they might have to move the depot at a later stage.
