Durban North home gutted by blaze

No one was injured or harmed after a house went up in flames in Durban North on Friday night.

A HOME on Glenmore Crescent was gutted and destroyed by a massive blaze on Friday night. Firefighters from the Durban North and the Umhlanga fire stations battled the fire for almost an hour and were able to bring the blaze under control. Luckily no one was injured or hurt in the fire. It’s understood the home owners were not at home at the time of the fire and the house was under renovation.

When Northglen News visited the home this morning, only the shell of the home remained, leaving just a skeleton of walls and windows. The fire broke out about 30 minutes after the storm which battered parts of Durban last night.

According to a source from the Durban North station who could not be named, firefighters could not access the home because it was structurally unsafe.

“We battled the fire for about 45 minutes and we couldn’t enter the home because of the wooden floors and because the roof of the house had begun to cave in. Thankfully there was no one home at the time of the fire. At this point we cannot say what caused the fire as it is still under investigation,” he said.

Charles Teversham, who lives next door, said he was sitting on his veranda when he heard a series of ‘explosions’.

“The first mini explosion went off and I looked over and I saw black smoke billowing out of one of the rooms. I heard two more loud bangs in quick succession, and within seconds the fire had spread through the home. My wife and I and other neighbours ran out to see if anyone was home at time. Fortunately no one was, but it was devastating to see the home burn down,” he said.
