Michelle hopeful for Olympic qualification

Michelle Weber has her mind firmly set on qualifying for the Rio Olympics this year.

FOR 13 years, South Africa lacked a homegrown female winner of the Midmar Mile. However, that all changed in the recent event as uMhlanga’s Michelle Weber became the first South African woman to take victory since Melissa Corfe in 2003. The 19-year-old claimed victory with just two seconds over her closest rival, British swimmer, Holly Hibbott. Now the former Crawford College La Lucia pupil is aiming for a spot in this year’s Rio Olympics.

Northglen News recently caught up with the aquatic star to find out about her historic win and plans for the year ahead.

“I was so nervous before the race, more so than I’ve been before. I wanted this victory so badly and as we got to the sprint finish, I spotted Holly, and we were neck-and-neck as we got to the line. It was one of the best feelings crossing the finish line, I was so stoked. I couldn’t believe it,” Weber said.

At the moment though, Weber’s focus is firmly set on defending her open water crowns at the national champs in three weeks’ time. The local resident has an impeccable record at the nationals and is a three-time and current 10km champ, and is a four-time and current 5km champ.

“Winning the 10km race means that I have the chance to go compete at the open water 10km race in Setubal, Portugal. The top nine swimmers in that race will automatically qualify for the Olympics in Rio. I’ve been training really hard and this year is about realising my Olympic dream. It’s a long road to get there by I’m determined to achieve my goals,” she said.

Weber attributed her success to her support structure.

“I train really hard but the support from my family, coach and siblings is really the backbone of my success and God. Without their love and backing I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
