When a little goes a long way…

Two ten-year-old locals are striving to raise some funds for the Feral Cat Rescue Trust by selling home-made dog biscuits.

IT has often been said: ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’. And two north Durban residents, although only in primary school, have decided that they would do just that. Some might sniff at the small amount of money raised by the two girls, but their efforts are being appreciated by the Feral Cat Rescue Trust, which said they needed every cent they could get to save cats in distress.

Stella Cuthbert of eMdloti and Talia Poupard, an uMhlanga resident, not only baked over a dozen dog biscuits, but also traversed through uMhlanga with the ‘baked goods’, selling them door-to-door.

What’s more, accompanying the girls was their ‘mascot’, Milo the Labrador, who helped them in their endeavour to save the feral felines, much to the amusement of the community dog owners. Through their selfless dedication, the two 10-year-old girls collected R55 worth of donations.

“We found an old recipe and decided to make the biscuits and sell them for the feral cats. We have both adopted cats from the trust and wanted to help its cause,” said Cuthbert.

Poupard said they hoped that their funds would go towards sterilising and buying food for the cats under the care of the trust.

“Also we hope it helps cover some of the medical bills of some of the kitties and helps with any efforts to help them find homes,” added Cuthbert.

The two Umhlanga College pupils said they plan to undertake more of these fundraisers in the future.

Tracey Hartley, the founder of the trust said, “The industrious duo managed to raise R55 for the trust and it has been deposited into our vet account to help pay for the many sterilisations that we do each week. We would like to say a very big thank you to them for all their hard work. With wonderful caring children like this in the world, the future looks bright for our planet.”

Last year, the Northglen News reported on similar selfless act by fellow eMdlotian, Emma Bishop, who initially made an anonymous donation R34 of her own savings towards the trust.

Touched by her deed, the trust members turned to the eMdloti Facebook page, Umdloti Beach, to track her down. From this, her donation spiraled into a tremendous reaction of support for the initiative.
