uMhlanga swimmer wins Midmar Mile

Michelle Weber, will now represent South Africa at the Henley Mile in London in July.

UMHLANGA’S Michelle Weber won her first ever Midmar Mile race on Sunday. Weber was the spearhead of South Africa’s challenge and after a third place finish last year was delighted with her results.

“I’m so stoked. I can’t believe it,” Weber said afterwards after equalling her result of 2013.

She also admitted with a smile that her pre-race assertion that she should be in the running for a top-five placing was more of a motivational poke at herself than a true belief that it was possible.

The former youth world champion and Crawford College La Lucia pupil will now represent South Africa at the Henley Mile in London in July.

In the men’s race, Chad Ho held off a strong challenge from fellow South African, Matthew Meyer, to win his seventh successive title in the elite men’s 14-30 age group.

The world 5km open water champion edged Meyer out by three seconds to continue his impressive streak.
