Harvard beckons for Crawford pupil

A pupil who attended a La Lucia based school is off to one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

AN 18-year-old Crawford La Lucia pupil has been accepted to Harvard University on a full scholarship. The writer, public speaker, and political enthusiast, who hails from the sprawling township of Umlazi, Mfundo Radebe is also a national debate champion and international grand champion of the Magna Carta International Essay/Speech competition.

He won the title of international grand champion of the Magna Carta competition after the public speaking finals held in London recently. His essay on government and the Constitution had been selected as the best across Africa, which allowed him to travel to London.

In his biography, he says: “My mother had me while she was in her matric year, which meant she had to drop out of school to take care of me. I grew up in Umlazi until my mother could no longer take care of me, which meant I had to move in with my absent father’s family in Ndolindi, north of KwaZulu-Natal, where I attended Gingindlovu Primary School.

“Due to the abuse that I experienced there, I had to move back to Umlazi where I stayed with my grandparents. I then attended Addington Primary School and worked consistently to be awarded the Michael and Susan Dell Scholarship, allowing me to attend Northwood School and attain a better education.”
Radebe said he always felt that he could make a difference in South Africa. He said he approached the ADvTECH board, which owns Crawford schools, seeking a full scholarship while he was at Northwood.

“I never gave up, even though they always said no, and I was eventually the first to be given a full compassionate scholarship to Crawford.”
