Stolen parrot named Evidence

The man who allegedly swiped the bird from the store has been released on R1 000 bail.

THE African grey parrot chick that was stolen from a pet store in Gateway two weeks ago has gained popularity among the local community, so much so that the owners of Julie’s Pets store have decided to keep the prized bird, which survived being stolen from the store and was then tracked down to a house in Verulam by local police.

According to one of the owners, Hawa Deedat, the eight-week-old parrot has been affectionately named Evidence.

“He has been through a lot of trauma and has become so popular. We have since decided to keep him at the store. Many people have come especially to see him,” said Deedat.

She confirmed that the feathered creature is doing well and has grown significantly since his ordeal.

What’s more, the man allegedly caught on CCTV footage swiping the bird from its ventilated box has been released on R1 000 bail.

Spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, Raymond Deokoran, confirmed that Debishand Prakash appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court last Friday.

His case has been remanded to 29 February.
