20 drunk drivers nabbed on the M4

One of the drivers nabbed in the roadblock was arrested for culpable homicide on the M4.

JUST two days before the tragedy on the M4 that left two cyclists dead, 20 drunk drivers were arrested in a joint operation between the Durban North SAPS and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI). The roadblock, which began just after 9pm, also saw one driver arrested for culpable homicide after he fatally struck a pedestrian on the busy freeway.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said that in the past three roadblocks (including Friday’s operation), 69 people had been arrested for driving under the influence.

“One of the drivers had struck and killed a pedestrian on the M4 and we arrested him for drunk driving and culpable homicide. In just a few hours, we were able to arrest 20 drivers for drunk driving. The M4 is one of the main routes in the north and we have a duty to protect other road users,” he said.
