Tributes pour in for M4 cyclists

The cyclists were on an early morning training ride when a vehicle smashed into the back of the group.

THE two cyclists tragically killed in an accident on the M4 this morning have been named. Richard da Silva (46) of Glen Anil and Jared Dwyer (36) of Glenwood. The duo were part of a group of around 30 cyclists from the Kings Park Cycling Club on an early morning training ride when disaster struck.

In a statement released today, the club stated the group was riding in the yellow demarcated left side of the road when a vehicle travelling at high speed collided with the two rear most riders.

The driver of the vehicle, 33, is being detained at the Durban North SAPS and is facing charges of drunken driving and culpable homicide. He is due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court this week.

Durban North resident, and club committee member, Sean Lucien, said the cycling fraternity were in mourning. Both men’s Facebook pages have been inundated with messages of condolences and tribute.
