Scores of children hurt as bakkie rolls in Inanda

School children flung from the back of a bakkie which overturned and rolled several times.

AT least 20 children aged between six and nine years old have been left with injuries ranging from minor to moderate after the vehicle they were traveling in overturned on the P718 in Inanda, North of Durban this afternoon.

According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, paramedics along with other emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after 4.30pm to find absolute mayhem as injured children lay spread out all over the road.

“Reports from the scene suggest that the children were ejected from the bakkie they were traveling in after the driver lost control on a steep roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn, rolling several times before finally coming to a rest in a small ravine next to the roadway.

“The driver had suffered serious injury and was in a critical condition. Advanced life support care was needed to stabilize him before he was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The injured children were triaged and treated on scene before being taken by ambulances to various nearby medical facilities for further treatment,” he said.
