Suspect arrested after uMhlanga break-in

A suspect looted a home and stole a car while a Chartwell Drive family was asleep.

A 25-YEAR-OLD suspect was arrested by members of the Greenwood Park SAPS after a high-speed chase ended in a crash on the M25 near Bester (KwaMashu) early on Tuesday morning. The man, who was allegedly involved in a house break-in on Chartwell Drive, had stolen a number of goods, including the homeowner’s VW Polo (which he later damaged in the crash) while the uMhlanga family were asleep. Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said the incident occurred at about 3am.

“He managed to steal a number of bottles of perfume, jewellery, a curved flatscreen TV, sunglasses and a duvet cover to hide the goods. Realising he wasn’t able to carry all the items on his own, he decided to load the homeowner’s vehicle and steal it. He was spotted at the traffic lights on the N2 off-ramp, going towards KwaMashu. A police vehicle from Greenwood Park SAPS, patrolling the area, noticed the suspect driving erratically.

“They attempted to pull him over and a high-speed chase ensued. They eventually lost sight of the suspect because he was driving in excess of 140 kilometres per hour when he lost control of the Polo. The car flipped several times and when the police caught up to the suspect, they found him calling for help. The airbags had prevented further injury. All of the goods stolen in the break-in were recovered,” he said.

Deokaran added that the suspect had been arrested previously by Phoenix SAPS for a similar offense.
