‘It wasn’t suicide,’ says M4 couple

The couple claims that the incident was a 'freak accident'.

THE couple who allegedly attempted to commit suicide off the M4 bridge near La Mercy has come forward, and are now claiming that the incident was a ‘freak accident’.

The husband, whose name is known to the Northglen News, said his wife fell over the edge of the bridge after she ‘reached for something’ and ‘lost her balance’.

He then lept in after her as he thought his wife had died, and ‘was trying to get her out’.

However, due to the drought, they soon found themselves stuck in the dense lagoon.

“A couple trying to commit suicide is far-fetched,” he said. “We have a happy family,” he added.

On Sunday evening, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) shared a post on its Facebook page, saying, “A passing motorist contacted the RUSA operations centre after noticing a female jumping over the bridge into the lagoon. A male seen fleeing the scene was stopped by the motorist. The male then broke free and also jumped over the bridge.”

They added that the officers found the couple stuck on an island in the lagoon after they swam to safety.  The pair was eventually rescued.
