Help someone with a life-threatening blood disorder

For 70 per cent of South Africans with blood diseases such as leukaemia, their only hope is to find a match via the bone marrow registry.

THE search is on to give patients suffering from leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders their one in 100 000 chance of survival.
On Friday, 5 February at the Gateway Hotel in uMhlanga, to the theme of ‘Touch of Africa’, guests will dress up having purchased tickets at R250 per person, which includes a drink on arrival, cocktail snacks, a scintillating talk as well as fabulous lucky draw prizes and raffles.

A prize will be awarded to the best-dressed guest. All the money raised will be donated to The Sunflower Fund to educate and recruit as many stem cell donors as possible.

Renowned humanitarian, adventurer, author, TV personality and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Kingsley Holgate, will be taking guests through a colourful account of his most recent conquest, the Heart of Africa expedition to Congo, during the course of the evening.

According to the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), hundreds of South Africans with blood diseases such as leukaemia reach the point where their only chance of survival is a bone marrow stem cell transplant. The main problem is finding a compatible bone marrow stem cell donor. Family members, especially siblings, are generally most suitable, but only 30 per cent of patients will have a compatible sibling. For the other 70 per cent, their only hope is to find a match via the SABMR.
