Community fumes over untidy construction site

For months local authorities have been communicating with the owner begging him to 'clean up' his act.

COMMUNITY members have grown tired of a dishevelled construction site on Brownsdrift Road in Umgeni Park.

Concerns have been raised regarding sand and rubble which are regularly dumped on the verge, forcing pedestrians to walk in the road. Issues with the overgrown weeds were also raised.

According to Brian Daish, chairman of the Greenwood Park CPF sector 4, he has been battling with the owner for almost two years to clean up his act.

“It is an eyesore and a health hazard. The recent load of sand has been lying on the verge for over a month. There is no walkway for pedestrians. This is illegal and dangerous,” he said.

Daish said he had reported the issue to councillor Shaun Ryley and the heath department. The owner, whose name is known to the Northglen News, was, however, shocked and confused by the community’s response to his property.

“It is a building site. There will constantly be scaffolding and rubble. I can’t exactly build a garden while the construction is still going on. The property will improve as the project progresses. I am halfway though and hope to have the project completed within three or four months,” he said, and requested not to be named.

When asked about the sand that was dumped on the verge the owner said that he would arrange for his building manager to remove the heap.

“It was only dropped off at the verge temporarily. My builders were instructed to move the sand and use that load first,” he said.
