Disruptions expected with Autumn Drive pipe repair project

Construction work is to repair a water pipe that runs along the length of the busy road.

IN 2014, eThekwini Water Services (EWS) announced the first phase of the Northern Aqueduct Augmentation (NAA) project. Martin Bright, project manager for eThekwini water and sanitation, at the time said the project comprised of installing 22km of pipeline valued at R150-million.

The aqueduct conveys potable water from Durban Heights Waterworks to a large number of terminal reservoirs in the system. Now work is set to commence on Autumn Drive with construction set for repair work on the section of 700mm diameter pipeline that runs along the road.

uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, said he understood that the project would mean added traffic congestion, but he urged residents to remain patient.

“This project forms an integral part in the upgrading of the infrastructure for water supply to Durban and surrounding areas. I know schools are back next week and that Autumn Drive is a very busy road but I urge residents to bear with the construction work as this repair work is essential for supplying water in the area. Traffic flow will be controlled by using a stop/go signage and Flagman system, in the vicinity of the pipeline route to facilitate construction and safeguard road users,” he said.

Esor Construction said they will endeavour to cause as little inconvenience as possible during the construction activities. Residents will have access to properties, while road works are in progress.
