Cornubia construction delay leaves residents in limbo

Councillor adds there is an air of uncertainty for Glenhills and Malacca Road residents as move to new development hit's construction hiccup.

THERE is an air of uncertainty permeating the Malacca Road Informal Settlement after delays in construction at the Cornubia housing project has left several families in limbo. Last year, uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, rejoiced with residents of the settlement after officials from the housing department said 39 families would be relocated to the Cornubia development.

The houses at the 1 200-hectare development are valued between R200 000 and R250 000. The houses comprise of a bathroom, kitchen and two bedrooms. The residents are expected to be moved in September this year.

However, the move has been delayed because of ‘poor soil conditions’ which has resulted in a slow down of construction.

“This is deeply frustrating for the residents of the Glenhills and the informal settlement. Last year we were assured by the head of housing that they were looking at relocating the entire settlement as it was small enough to do so. In recent weeks I’ve been told that the project for the 1B development needs R100-million more to continue work which had stalled due to poor soil conditions.

“The builders need extra fill to secure the homes. I have spoken to the head of housing and he will be following up on the matter. There is an air of uncertainty at the settlement, you can’t promise residents and not follow through. I’m going to make sure the promises made are kept,” he said.

Once the families are moved it is understood the shacks they used to live in will be demolished.
