What to do in Durban this holiday…

There are lost of things to do in Durban, besides lounging on our beautiful sunny beaches this festive season.

EVERY year thousands of people flock to Durban during the festive season to enjoy our beautiful sunny beaches.
However, what many of them don’t realised is that there is more to Durban than just sandy beaches.

Northglen News has scoured through some of the best holiday and tourists attractions of our beautiful city and complied an ultimate list of fun things to do in Durban.

1. Durban, uMhlanga is home to the country’s most famous cat, Skabenga. Feline fans can catch a glimpse of the pampered cat at the Oyster Box Hotel. The famed feline recently caused an international stir when he disappeared for several days. However, he was returned home safe and sound. It is said that Skabenga wondered into the hotel more than a decade ago and has been a firm favourite ever since. 2. One of Durban’s most iconic sites is the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Take the family to the People’s Park at the stadium. Not only is there a children’s play area with secure parking, but the site’s paving offers the perfect spot for skate-boarding, rollerblading and bike rides. Entrance to the park is free. Brave souls can also opt to test out the infamous  Big Rush Big Swing, which has earned the Guinness Book of Records tittle of the world’s tallest swing. 3. Hang ten at The Wave House at Gateway, which not only provides an opportunity to ride artificial waves on the ‘Flow ride’r, but also features an exciting super tube and outdoor outdoor water playground. Contact  031 584 9400.

4. Every Saturday from 9am to 4pm the Beachwood mangroves nature reserve offers some exciting guided trails through the 76-hectare ecosystem.
Besides having the largest population of mangrove trees in the Durban area, the reserve also hosts more than a million crabs, as well as KZN dwarf chameleons, water mongoose and climbing whelks (a type of sea snail). The primary aim of the Honourary officers at the reserve is to facilitate conservation education. Contact 083 293 3611.

5. Durban’s well-known  Mini Town is guaranteed to offer some ‘massive’excitement. Established over 30 years ago, the historical landmark features some scaled replicas (1:24) of the city’s most notable landmarks.
The tiny models even feature a railway system, a harbour and an airport.
Mini Town is the perfect place for a family outing.
