Collecting cents for Feed the Babies

Recently, the pupils at the Broadacres Pre-Primary School collected and donated R1 600 towards the non-profit organisation - with only small change!

THE Feed the Babies Fund has been combating hunger and malnutrition among children in KwaZulu-Natal’s most poverty-stricken communities since 1957, but it is the small efforts from schools, such as the Broadacres Pre-Primary School in Durban North, that enables the organisation to continue with its much-needed initiatives.

Recently, the pupils at the school collected and donated R1 600 towards the non-profit organisation. What’s more, the amount was raised entirely out of cents collected since January, said school principal, Jenny Gaul.

This is an annual project for the school. Not only does it enable the staff and pupils to give back to the community, but is also used as an opportunity to teach the children the importance and joy of altruism and highlight the plight of children of their own age who are less fortunate.

“Every Friday the children bring ‘cents for Friday’, and this year their efforts accumulated R1 600 for the fund,” said Gaul.

The fund was initiated by a team of doctors and health workers, led by Dr Zelda Jacobson from the University of KwaZulu-Natal as a feeding scheme to assist hungry children. While the aim was initially to provide at least one nutritious meal to various children on a daily basis, the fund also strives to promote and maintain the health, hygiene and safety of children in KZN.
