‘Sweet’ fundraiser for furry critters

In aid of several animal activist groups, a passionate artist and animal lover baked and decorated a beautiful fruit cake, which is being raffled off as a fundraising initiative.

‘PAT-A-CAKE, pat-a-cake, bakers man bake me a cake as fast as you can’, as the famous nursery rhyme goes. And that is exactly what local resident, Janine Du Pisanie, did.

In aid of several animal activist groups, the passionate artist and animal lover baked and decorated a beautiful fruit cake, which is being raffled off as a fundraising initiative.

The funds raised by the project will be donated towards the Durban North Neighbour’s Rescue Fund (DNNRF), Feeding the Furbals, Animally Haven and Bark Angels.

Kerry Haylett, one of the founding members of the DNNRF, said she was left speechless by the support and response.

“So far, one lady has sold 11 sheets of raffle tickets, which amounts to R1 100. If all the sheets are sold, we will raise R5 500, which will fill many furball bellies in January,” she said

The cake, which measures 23 centimetres in diameter, was decorated with marzipan and fondant icing.

It features hand-cut, two-dimensional artwork of a festive dog and feline duo, framed in beautiful holly. According to Du Pisanie, it took 16 hours to bake and decorate the confectionery treat.

“I feel so proud to be assisting these organisations, some of which are relatively new. They do such amazing work,” she said.
