Attempted rapes rock Glenashley Beach goers

Durban North woman says her attacker had his penis exposed when he jumped on her.

A MAN has been arrested following two attempted rapes in the space of two hours on Glenashley Beach this morning. Members of Marshall Security’s special operations team tracked the man down. He attempted to run away using the thick vegetation around the dunes on the beach to evade capture, but was soon apprehended. Earlier in the day, a 46-year-old woman revealed she had been violated by the man, who had pinned her down, while trying to rape her.

The Durban North resident who spoke to Northglen News in an emotional interview at the Durban North police station said she tussled with her alleged rapist for almost four minutes as she tried to throw him off her.

“It was the first day of my holiday and I decided to go down to Glenashley Beach to have a relaxing day out. I got there around 8.30am and the minute I arrived I noticed a vagrant sleeping in the bushes. I moved away to look for a spot to tan. There was another local resident who was going surfing and asked me to watch his stuff. There was also two fishermen about 15 meters away from me. A few moments later the vagrant woke up and walked towards me. He began staring at me, I was very uncomfortable.

“The wind picked up shortly after and the surfer and I moved further down the beach to seek shelter from the sand. The vagrant followed us and kept staring at me. At this point the surfer told me to stay safe and to watch out for this guy because something didn’t feel right,” she said.

A little while later the local surfer left, the Durban North resident said it was at this point she’d lost sight of the man.

“I was tanning my back and I had this sixth sense that he was around. I half turned and saw him advancing towards me with his pants down and stroking his penis. He dived on top of me and pinned my wrists behind my head. His full weight held me down and he was kissing my neck. I was wriggling and screaming for help. He also tried to pull my bikini bottom off and was groping.

“I kept shouting and asked him ‘what do you want? Do you want money?’. He just replied ‘No, I want to fuck you’. This made me scream even louder and I kept trying to throw him off me. When he knew he wasn’t getting what he wanted, he simply got up and walked away calmly, past the fishermen, like he had done nothing wrong,” she said.

Following the sexual assault, the terrified resident then ran on to the road to signal for help and was assisted by her niece who was running at the time.

“I just feel violated, I can’t get the stink of him off me. His face was so close to mine the whole time. If I hadn’t managed to turn on to my side or if I was in any other position he would have penetrated me,” she said.

She added that she wanted to warn other residents, especially women to be especially vigilant on this stretch of beach.

According to police, the vagrant had, just hours after the first attempted rape, tried to sexually assault another woman on the same stretch of beach.

A case of attempted rape has been opened and the man is currently in the holding cells at the Durban North SAPS station.
