Man found with R3-million in gold

A man was found with gold worth millions stashed in his pockets at King Shaka International Airport.

THE SA Revenue Service is estimating that gold bars, confiscated from a man who was hiding them under his kurta, are valued at about R3-million.

The man was travelling on a flight from Dubai last week and was disembarking at King Shaka International Airport. The man was found with 48 gold bars, weighing a total of 5.6kgs. He had them stashed in his pockets in a money bag around his waist.

SARS spokesman, Sandile Memela, has been quoted as saying: “The luggage of the passenger, who was disembarking from Dubai, was searched in the common search room after being profiled by the customs passengers team.”

Memela added that the man had not yet appeared in court.
