SPCA’s top calendar snaps revealed

Three of the calendar spots were 'snapped up' by local residents.

THE Durban & Coast SPCA revealed the 13 ‘paw-fectly’ photogenic pet photos to grace their 2016 calendar last week. Three of the heartwarming images were taken by local residents.

Earlier this month, the SPCA announced its ‘Paws for the Camera’ competition, during which the public was urged to share their visually stunning photos featuring people and their pets in their most beautiful, loving or wacky moments.

Lindsey Fogarty, marketing assistant at the SPCA, said they received over 140 entries.

“We were blown away by the public’s responses. Not only was the calibre of entries excellent, but we also managed to raise R8 000 on the entry fees alone. What is even more exciting is that we could raise over R130 000 through the calendar sales,” she said.

According to Fogarty, the funds would take a huge weight off the organisation’s shoulders during the busy festive season.

“On average, we go through 150kg of pet food per day, and with kennels and catteries filling up from now until January we use even more. These funds will definitely help us to care for these animals,” she added.

The cover spot was snapped up by Durban North resident, Alison Chadwick. The photo of her growling three-month-old Jack Russell, Jessie, stole the judges’ hearts. “She is now all grown up, but still loves having her photo taken. I felt like such a proud mother when I found out that Jessie would feature on the cover. I actually couldn’t believe it. There were so many breathtaking entries,” she said.

The October and July pages feature the photos of uMhlanga friends, Leigh Corbett and Sally Mackay. Corbett’s photo features her beloved two-year-old pug pup, Pimms. “She was adopted from Project Dog. She is completely spoilt and rules the roost. One day we were all playing and just decided to put the fairy wings on her and the photo just turned out to be beautiful,” she said. The July photo features Mackay’s German Shepherds, Tazer (2) and Dakota (3), at the Prestondale wetland.
