Local yogi creates positive karma with SPCA donation

La Lucia resident, Tizi le Roux, has collected more than 100 bags of cat and dog food for the SPCA through her free yoga classes.

THROUGH her altruistic efforts, La Lucia resident, Tiziana (aka Tizi) le Roux, has not only been facilitating a healthier lifestyle among fellow community members, but has also been collecting some much-needed food for the cats and dogs at the Durban & Coast SPCA.

The retired professional ballerina has collected more than 100 bags of cat and dog food through her free yoga classes, which she teaches at her home in La Lucia.
All that Le Roux asks in return is that members donate a bag of pet food.

“I am passionate about animals and I have always wanted to do something charitable but never knew what to do. This project kind-of happened by accident, but has been so rewarding,” she said.

After retiring from her dancing career, Le Roux took up competitive body-building for a few years. However, when her trainer passed away, she decided to experiment with a form of fitness that would reunite her with her dance roots by restoring her flexibility – yoga.

“I immediately started feeling better, in both body and mind. I was inspired to do a yoga teacher’s training course, but in order to complete my practical exams I needed to conduct some classes. So I began with a single student and my class just grew from there,” she said.

Currently, Le Roux has 30 regular members who participate in the classes offered every weekday.

“It is so much fun. Everyone enjoys and benefits from it,” she said. Le Roux added that she hopes to turn the initiative into a regular project and will begin a new collection in January.
