Avid gardener shares blooming passion

"A garden is never finished. There is always an area that can be revamped or upgraded," said uMhlanga resident, Laurelle Barnett.

PLANTS and flowers have always been a passion for uMhlanga resident, Laurelle Barnett. Since retiring in 2000, she has become actively involved in the world of gardening.

For the last 10 years, she has been the president of the Umhlanga Rocks Garden Club and is also a committee member of the Durban North Garden Club. The former teacher was introduced to the clubs through her friends, who urged her to join.

“Gardening is good for the soul. It brings you into contact with nature and it is rewarding to watch something grow and flower. I have always had an affinity for gardening as my parents also loved planting and tending to their garden,” she said.

According to Barnett, the creative aspect of gardening is what draws her most to the colourful hobby. “A garden is never finished. There is always an area that can be revamped or upgraded. Designing your space and gathering inspiration from other people’s little patch of paradise brings one immense joy,” she said.

What’s more, the mother, wife and grandmother has also linked gardening to one of her other passions, birdwatching.

“My husband and I incorporate plants into our garden that attract a variety of birds. That way we can enjoy both,” she explained.

When Barnett is not involved in the gardening clubs, she is also involved in the Retired Teachers’ Association, the Northlands Old Girls’ Association and the Decorative Arts Association.

The Umhlanga Rocks Garden Club’s monthly meetings are held every second Tuesday of the month at the Rolling Hills Country Club at 9.30am. New members are always welcome.

A guest speaker is invited to cover various topics, such as soil quality and garden design. Regular outings are also arranged as well as fundraising events for various NPOs. Contact Laurelle on 031 564 5515.
