Billy makes history with sixth world title

Former Northwood School pupil makes history at the World Flowboarding Championships (WFC).

THERE aren’t enough superlatives to describe what Sunningdale’s Billy Tennant achieved in the World Flowboarding Championships (WFC) at the Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi recently. Not only did he win two world titles, but he won his sixth world pro-body boarding title at the annual championships and his third drop knee title, becoming the first South African athlete to win three successive flowboarding world titles.

What’s more, the former Northwood School pupil has become the first athlete in the world to win both divisions back-to-back. In July last year, the 30-year-old also made history by becoming the first North Durban athlete finish in the top three at the US Open of Flowboarding, where he nabbed a silver medal.

“I’m super stoked. It’s something I wanted to go for but I knew I had to up my game because the other riders from all over the world stepped up their games. I really went for broke and managed to pull it off, which is incredibly awesome. Nobody in the world has been able to do this, so it’s made the feeling even more special,” he said.

In the team competition, team UAE clinched gold while team USA claimed second place, closely followed by South Africa, which took home the bronze.
