Golden Hours warns of fake fundraisers

Scammers are using a school for mentally handicapped children to fleece residents.

TWO women, posing as staff from Golden Hours School for The Mentally Handicapped, have been soliciting money from local residents for a supposed fundraiser. The school’s finance secretary, Lyn Wilson, said she was appalled that scammers would stoop this low to make money, exploiting their situation.

The special needs school currently caters for 185 children with various disabilities.

“We received a call from a concerned resident who saw a white taxi cruising the area at St Martin’s School. Two young women jumped out the taxi and asked for money, saying they were collecting funds for the school.

“I would just like to warn residents and the public to be aware that this is a scam. We never send anybody out to collect funds. All our fundraising is done at our craft markets, held every Sunday. They are exploiting the pupils and staff at the school,” Wilson said.
