Lights, camera, action!

Join Durban North aspiring film-makers as the debut theit new motion picture, 'White Knuckle'. Expect loads of action packed and dramtic scenes in the coming-of-age story surrounding a young professional boxer.

THERE is more to the film industry than fame; just ask three passionate Durban North students, Hadley Potgieter, Trent Moffett and Charles Matthews.
Last week, the Northglen News caught up with the aspiring film-makers to find out about their soon-to-be-released motion picture, ‘White Knuckle’.

The film will be showcased at Suncoast Casino on 28 November at 6pm as part of their degree curriculum at AFDA Film School.

According to Matthews (writer and director), the film is a coming-of-age story involving a young professional boxer.

“Alex van Niekerk is a failed boxer with a tendency to drink. He uses the drinking to get over his pain but he doesn’t realise that the drinking is holding him back. In order to get where he needs to be, he will have to overcome himself and his inner demons,” he said. Matthews said he wrote the film with the aim of sharing a message with the audience.

“I have always wanted to write and direct. It is incredibly rewarding to envision something in your head and then to see it on the screen for everyone to enjoy. With this film I had a message that I want people to take away – no matter what situation they find themselves in, it is one’s perspective of life that will help them overcome or move on from their issues,” he said.

Moffett, who stars as Van Niekerk, said audiences could expect some heavy dramatic as well as exciting action scenes. “I spent three hours a day preparing mentally and physically for this role. I wanted to accurately portray the strength of a boxer, Alex’s inner turmoil as well as the strength of the human nature to overcome any adversity,” he said.

The 21-year-old third-year student said his acting aspirations were inspired by Michael Jackson’s music videos. “He was able to tell different stories in such a short amount of time, and that is what I want to do as well – to accurately portray and tell someone else’s story,” he said.

As students, the crew was given permission from the municipality to film at various sites across Durban. Producer, Potgieter, challenged audiences to identify these sites while viewing the film.

“Ten members of the audience will also be randomly selected to review the film on the day. It is rewarding to see everything come together after months of planning, and we are excited to hear feedback regarding the show,” she said.
