Northlands Bowling Club gives back

Bowls club hosts PROTEC students to give them a taste of the art of bowls.

NORTHLANDS Bowling Club has never shied away from giving back to the community; in May last year, the club hosted the South African National Championships for Disabled Bowlers, which was a huge success. The Durban North club recently hosted students from the Programme for Technological Careers (PROTEC) Tongaat, to teach them the art of bowls.

PROTEC is a national, independent non-profit educational service provider in South Africa that specialises in science, mathematics and technology education.

Club secretary, Gillian Rootman, said the students enjoyed the day out learning about the sport.

“Last year the we offered our clubhouse to PROTEC as a venue for life skills development. We then taught many of the youngsters on how to bowl and a game of bowls, it was such a great novelty for the students who had fun exploring new talents.

“As a result of the success of the first outing we offered to host the event again which was just fantastic. It’s important that events like this have a social element for the students. They loved discovering the skill involved in bowling and it teaches them how to work as a team,” she said.
