Pedestrians targeted on North Coast Road

Two people have been robbed at knifepoint on North Coast Road in recent months.

FOLLOWING the reports of two armed robberies on North Coast Road in recent weeks, it would seem that opportunistic thieves are targeting unsuspecting victims on the busy road. The latest armed robbery occurred on Tuesday.

W/O Leon Audh of the Greenwood Park SAPS said a woman was waiting for transport when she was approached by an unknown man at around 5pm.

He allegedly crossed the road before he pulled a knife from his jacket pocket and demanded her cell phone and cash.

“The woman then threw her cell phone on the ground and the suspect picked it up and fled. The value of the Samsung cell phone was approximately R1 000,” said Audh.

Similarly, a man was accosted and robbed by three men at knifepoint in August.

The victim was allegedly approached while waiting at a robot near the train station. The suspect is said to have distracted the victim by asking him for the time.

At that point they were joined by two other men, one of whom produced a knife. They demanded cash and immediately began searching the victim, taking around R200 from him, added Audh.

However, the robbers were soon interrupted as a police patrol vehicle drove past the scene and the suspects fled as soon as they spotted the van.

No arrests have been made, but Audh confirmed that a case of armed robbery was opened at the station.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Greenwood Park SAPS Vispol commander, Maj Sibisi, on 078 153 3403.
