Altruistic tots give back to community

Staff and tots at the Oasis Pre-Primary School in Durban North recently hosted an event to spoil the children at the St Thomas' Children's Home in Sydenham. They also collected some much needed donations for the home.

EVERY year, the Oasis Pre-Primary School in Durban North sacrifices its third term outing to give back to the community; specifically, to brighten the lives of the children under the care of the St Thomas’ Children’s Home in Sydenham.

Most of the children at the home come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Some have been abandoned or orphaned while others have escaped sexual, mental and/or physical abuse.

Additionally, 50 per cent of the children are HIV-positive and need specialised care and nutrition. Currently, the home has 50 children (aged two to ten years) in its care. The annual day is used to share some joy and happiness in the lives of both the children and staff of the home.

While the Oasis staff rally support from the school’s parents – in terms of donations – the tiny tots also donate their time to make sandwiches and decorate cookies for the special day.

“Our aim has always been to serve the community, but at the same time we strive to teach our learners the importance of giving back to the community,” said Oasis principal, Gill Robinson.

On the day, all the children were treated to pony rides, various fun games and activities, including face painting, as well as delicious treats. Dozens of toys, toilet paper and shoe polish tins, which the home was in dire need of, were also donated on the day. Last year, the pre-school pupils collected and donated their pocket money to help the home.

“It is always a special day for the children. They look forward to it every year. For many, it is the first time they experience some of these activities and treats. We are extremely grateful for the school’s efforts,” said Rachael Jamali, St Thomas’ Pre-School principal.

Jamali has made an appeal to the community to donate clothes, toys and other items towards the home’s second-hand store. The donated items will be sold to fund the care of the children. Donations can be dropped off at the pre-school on Waterkant Road.
