Ronnie bids fond farewell to ‘Saders

The most vocal man on, and off the pitch says farewell to local rugby club.

NASHUA Crusaders head coach, Ronnie Uys, bid a fond farewell to players, supporters and staff last week after being at the helm of the Durban North club for three years. The former Leopards, Sharks, Eastern Province and Cheetahs prop will now take up a position at Durban High School (DHS) coaching schoolboy rugby.

The 36-year-old was always the first person at the grounds and was known by his booming voice, which echoed around fields in the KZN club arena.

“It is sad to go and there are a few mixed emotions, but it’s also a new chapter in my life which I’m looking forward to. The people – from the staff to the players to the supporters – have been incredibly supportive and I’ve been blessed to be part of this club.

“I’m looking forward to making an impact with the DHS rugby team but I will always be supporting the Crusaders in club rugby. There is just a wealth of talent in the team and I’ve been fortunate enough to make lifelong friends.
“Who knows, you may see me at the games screaming support for the boys. To all the supporters, without you it would have been lonely out there on the field, thank you for the memories,” he said.

Club chairman, Barry Brown, wished Uys the best for his new venture but added his larger than life personality would be missed.

“Ronnie has been with us for three years and has been more than a coach to the rugby club. He will always be part of the ‘Saders family and hopefully we will still hear his booming voice on the sidelines when he comes to support our teams. Ronnie, you have left huge shoes to fill and we wish you well for your future,” Brown said.
