Locals say fond farewell to Umhlanga club

Local couple say adieu to lifesaving club after 16 years in business.

ONE of uMhlanga’s most popular spots, whose clientèle has included a number of international tourists as well as visitors from out the province, has closed its doors after 16 years in business.

The pub and kitchen at the Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club, or Life Savers’, as the locals call it, has been a firm favourite for it’s vibe with its deck right on the edge of the ocean. Much to the dismay and sadness of their loyal customers, Martin and Athne Pretorius, who ran the pub and kitchen at the club, served their last order on Sunday. The club building will now undergo an upgrade and the duo said they believe it’s time for a change.

The Pretorius’ have always been avid supporters and sponsors to many charities, including the Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation.

“When I started this venture, it was to help provide funds for the lifesaving club, but over the years it became more than just that. Visitors loved the place for its unique vibe and the people of uMhlanga who have made this spot what it is today. It definitely won’t be the same, but I do think it’s time for change. It’s a sad moment and I’ve been fortunate and privileged to be part of the growth of the club, which has been amazing,” explained Martin.

“I’m going to miss the camaraderie and atmosphere, and while we don’t have set plans, we going to go on holiday and for the first time in 20 years: I’m going to be able to have a Christmas lunch with my daughter, who lives in Hermanus. My son and other daughter live here in uMhlanga and we’ve not been able to have a Christmas together. I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with the family.”

Martin and Athne have also been lifesavers of the club for almost 20 years and were recently inducted into the lifetime membership category.

“It’s been great working here and I’m going to miss the many friends we’ve made. It’s one of the most awesome spots in the province and I’ve seen the same people three generations on. I’ve treasured being part of those memories,” Athne said.
