Durban students join #FeesMustFall protest

Durban students from various tertiary institutions joined the #FeesMustFall protest march this morning as they marched in the CBD demanding more money be allocated to education.

THE #FeesMustFall protests began this morning with hundreds of students uniting at Curries Fountain grounds at DUT before moving through the campuses.

Metro and SAPS held a high police presence outside the grounds in anticipation of any violence.

The students toyi-toyied out the grounds and came to a stop in the middle of the road between DUT’s ML Sultan and Steve Biko campuses singing and changing “fees must fall.”

Berea Mail’s Lorna Charles Bux, who was at the scene said students from all walks of life had banded together in support of the #Fees must Fall protests that have swept throughout the country.

Students from DUT, UKZN, UNISA and MUT have united to have their voices heard.  A student, only known as Thobisi, told Berea Mail during the protest: “We are getting students from every institution today to submit a memorandum to the MEC at the ANC offices. We want the money set aside for the Commonwealth Games to be reallocated to education. Surely education comes before these Games!” The student also said exams at UNISA had been disrupted this morning.

Students returned to Curries Fountain after the protest march.
