Siblings ride the banks of success

Sunningdale siblings improve on personal bests at BMX Grand Nationals.

IT’S rare for siblings to share the same passion and even rarer for them to excel at it. But for Matthew, Connor and Ethan Pieters, they have done just that, in the sport of BMX riding. The Sunningdale siblings recently returned from a successful BMX Grand Nationals tournament.

Judging from their recent experiences, there is only one way for the talented trio, and that is upwards. Matthew, who attends Virginia Preparatory School, finished second in the nationals, while his brothers, who attend Glenashley Junior Primary, finished fourth and fifth respectively, a vast improvement from their performances last year.

Northglen News recently caught up with the trio to find out about their performances.

Last year I finished fifth and I was trying to come in the top three at the nationals this year. I believed in myself and my ability and I was ecstatic with my silver. It’s a dream come true and my plan is to win a gold in next year’s champs,” Matthew said.

His younger brother, Connor, who finished eighth in last year’s champs, improved on his performances as well, finishing in the top five this year.

“I’ve been training very hard and I’m very happy to have finished fourth. My dad and mom help motivate me and I’m very proud of my and my brothers’ performances,” he said.

The youngest Pieters sibling, Ethan (5), missed out on the grand nationals last year due to a concussion sustained in practice the day before. This year the young tyke broke into the upper echelon of his age group, finishing fifth in the nationals.

“I’m not going to give up and I want to work hard to do better next year,” he said.
