Parkhill dumping causes a stink

Parkhill residents have expressed outrage at the recent escalation in dumping in and around the area.

RESIDENTS in Parkhill said they are fed up with the reckless and inconsiderate individuals who have recently been dumping their refuse throughout the area. The latest outrage was sparked when household refuse was discovered dumped outside Conyngham Park.

In recent months, the Clarendon Neighbourhood Watch has taken proactive measures to clean and beautify the area. In addition to cleaning and maintaining the neighbourhood’s verges (in between the municipality’s scheduled cuts), they also adopted the spot of land on the corner of Clarendon Road and Eastview Road from council, and have begun upgrading the little corner into an area the community can enjoy. Through these efforts they have also provided additional income to a local gardener, Xolani Madlala (25).

What’s more, the group has also worked tirelessly with the Parks Department to upgrade Conyngham Park. Bronwyn Samuels, an active member of the watch, said they were tired of putting up with the rubbish and she will be taking steps to report offenders. In addition to the dumping at the park, Samuels said there have also been incidents reported on Clarendon Road and at the Adopt-a-Spot.

“We are sick and tired of this behaviour. We are trying to create a beautiful and safe environment for our community, but this is very discouraging,” she said.

The issue of dumping has also seeped onto the doorstep of neighbouring communities such as Durban North, with residents reporting an influx of dumping on Mackeurtan Avenue and Virginia Circle. Residents who have been taking their rubbish out on non-collection-days have also earned the ire of the community.

Ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, said the behaviour was unacceptable and urged residents to report such incidents to Durban Solid Waste (DSW).

“People undertake such activity because they believe that they will get away with it, so the only way that we can curb the behaviour is to report it. If residents witness such activity, they should take photos for evidence and go to their local police station to make an affidavit. All the evidence can be sent to me and I will ensure that it reaches the relevant authorities,” he said.

Contact DSW to report dumping and have it cleared on 031 311 8804.
