Nandi moves in ‘hip’ circles

Greenwood Park resident talks to NGN about her role on the recent Shall We Dance production.

BELLY dancing is not only a great exercise, but it’s an art that, with time and practice, one can perfect. Just ask Greenwood Park resident, Nandi Mzobe. The 25-year-old recently starred in the Shall We Dance production, which showcased dancers from different styles. Nandi will also be vying for top spot in this year’s SA Dance Teachers’ Association competition.

“I started my belly dancing safari in 2008. My mother drove to me to my first class and I felt I couldn’t do any other form of dancing, but I wanted to give it a try. After a few lessons, my teacher was really impressed and said I was really good. Belly dancing became a way of expressing myself but also it boosted my confidence, which changed my life,” the Belly Divas Dance Studio member said.

“Mention belly dancing, and many people think along the lines of semi-naked lap dancing. It is sexy, but it is also fun. Belly dancing can tone, strengthen and improve your flexibility. I don’t have to gym because it is such a great workout.”

Nandi was able to share some of her talents in the recent Shall We Dance production.

“It was my second time being involved with the show and it was amazing. There’s no other platform that allows dancers that type of exposure and experience. You get to meet incredibly talented dancers from different styles and it is just a fun place to perform. We had three sold-out shows, which was super. I would definitely do it again,” she said.

As December approaches, Nandi is preparing for the SA Dance Teachers’ Association competition (belly dancing division).

“The last time I finished second and I realised the reason I did not win was that I hadn’t trained properly. I was also distracted with my personal life, but this time around I’m hoping to win. I’m going for the top spot,” she said.
