Coastal Clash rolls forward

Durban will play host to only its second inter-provincial Roller Derby bout.

KWAZULU-Natal’s roller derby league, Durban Derby, is no stranger to firsts. The league was the first ever in the province, they also made history hosting the first inter-provincial roller derby bout on the African continent in November last year.

Now the local skaters are hoping to add a new chapter to their history books, winning their first inter-provincial bout, as the MissFits from Durban will take on the formidable P-Town All Stars from Pretoria.

Northglen News recently caught up with local resident, Szerdi Nagy (‘Julia Sieze-Her’), to find out about the coastal clash.

“We are very excited to be hosting another out of town team, this time the P-Town All Stars out of Pretoria. We cannot wait. We have been working really hard all year and are super excited to play in this bout,” she said.

Last year, in the first inter-provincial bout, the Durban Derby Knights lost to Gauteng’s Slam Damsels. Nagy said that game offered invaluable experience to her chargers.

“As we are so far away from leagues in the rest of South Africa, we mostly only get the chance to play each other, which is awesome, but we can only learn so much from this. Getting the chance to play a team we are not familiar with will really push our skaters. I think its going to be a good, solid show of derby. I think our teams are pretty evenly matched, so I think its going to be an exciting and close game to watch,” she said.

Nagy, who is captaining the side on the day, has been offering words of wisdom to her team and says she’s asked her team to show their hearts on the track.

“As far as wisdom goes, we have been training hard as a unit this entire year, and if we can just go in and play with our hearts, all our conditioning will pull us through,” she said.
