Glenhills pipe replacement nears completion

Ward councillor says Glen Hills residents to experience water outages as pipe replacement project continues.

THE pipe replacement project in Glenhills is nearing completion and should be completed in the next three weeks. That is the word from uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, who said the project, valued at R2.4-million, was much-needed.

At the moment, construction is being carried out on Rinaldo Road, a site which in the past has been problematic due to the repeated bursts of the main water pipe. The construction, which has been going on for the past three months, will see the old asbestos cement pipes being replaced with new durable steel pipes.

De Boer also asked residents to bear with the city and the construction process as some households may experience water outages while the project is being carried out. Several roads within the area have also been incorporated into the replacement project.

“This is the third significant project for the Glenhills area since I was voted in as councillor. First it was the instalment of the mini traffic circles, then the eventual relocation of the Malacca Road Informal Settlement residents to Cornubia, and now the pipe replacement project. Residents have been calling for the pipe replacement for a long time and I have been lobbying in council to get the project started. There have been frequent burst water pipes in the area, particularly on Rinaldo Road, and this upgrade of infrastructure is much-needed.

“I urge residents to be patient and hang in with the construction process as there will be water outages, as the engineers have to test water pressure and making sure a thorough job is done. There were some complaints from residents earlier this year regarding the noise and mess, but I think residents should focus on the end result, which is state-of-the-art water pipes that will serve the community. I have been assured that the project should be completed within three weeks,” he said.
