ACCORDING to the annual crime statistics released earlier this month house robberies and break-ins are on the increase.
To combat and prevent these criminal activities the Greenwood Park SAPS have urged community members to conduct a ‘mock robbery’ of their home in order to pinpoint the risks in their homes.
“Take time off one day and imagine how you would break into your own home. What could you do to make it so risky for the criminal so that the reward is minimal and that he/she will think twice before breaking into your home,” said W/O Leon Audh, spokesman for the station.
He suggested residents to take the following aspects into consideration when conducting their mock break-in:
- Why would you want to break in? Does the risk outweigh the reward?
- How much time do you have to break in before the police and /or security arrive?
- Where are the hiding spots or blind spots on your property?
- What tools will you need to break in?
- Where are the ideal spots from where a criminal can monitor your property?
- Will you go in through the door or window or roof?
- Where are your potential escape routes?
- What is the ideal time that you would break into your own home?
- Consider who you invited to your home in the last three months. Where did they go and what did they see?
- Are your valuables visible from the road? Inspect your home during the night and day.
