uMhlanga’s famous feline turns 14

More than 100 people attended Skabenga's birthday party.

FELINE fun was the order of the day as the Oyster Box Hotel in uMhlanga celebrated the birthday of their famous resident cat, Skabenga.

The celebrity feline is believed to be 14 years old. More than 100 people attended the auspicious event at the hotel to wish the royal tomcat a happy birthday. Guests were treated to face-painting, a magic show and decadent treats.

“At the hotel we make a habit out of celebrating our history and Skabenga is definitely an integral part of our history. People love him. For many people they feel that their visit to the hotel is not complete unless they get to see Skabenga,” said hotel spokeswoman, Joanne Hayes.

Staff also utilsed the event to collect some much-needed food for the Feral Cat Rescue Trust.

“We asked guests to bring along a packet of cat food instead of presents for Skabenga, and the response has been phenomenal,” added Hayes.

Skabenga slowly stole the hearts of the staff and guests at the hotel after he wandered onto the property as a feral cat several years ago.

Earlier this year the hotel was marred by panic, when Skabenga went missing for several days. He was later found and safely returned.
