A CHANCE encounter with a guitar in an arts and culture class inspired a daring dream within La Lucia resident, Markus Krenzer. The 16-year-old dreams of becoming a successful musician.

“I have always loved listening to music. But, before that day, I had never played any instruments. I played a few notes, and I just instantly knew that this was what I wanted to do. A few weeks later I began taking lessons,” he said.

Six years down the line and it seems that the Crawford La Lucia pupil is well on his way to achieving his goal. Recently, the aspiring musician landed a starting role in a national Bata advert.

“I was invited to attend an audition at Auckland Park in Johannesburg several weeks ago. Then I got a callback and eventually got offered a leading role, where I was required to play the guitar and sing,” said an elated Krenzer.

On Wednesday, 10 September he started with rehearsals.

“We rehearsed from 3pm that afternoon to 8pm that night. We rehearsed on the Friday again and then began filming on the Saturday morning from 6am and kept going until 7pm. It was crazy, but fun,” he said.

Krenzer will be seen on both the television adverts as well as billboards across the country. Additionally, he will be participating in the International Talent Showcase (ITS) in Roodepoort on 2 October, where he hopes to be spotted by an American talent scout.

On Wednesdays, when he has an opportunity, Krenzer also performs at Zack’s in the Windermere Centre in Durban.
