Building a new generation

After volunteering at the newly formed NPO, Benjamin Generation, based in the Midlands, Durban North resident, Jodie-Lee Donnison, hopes to collect some much needed toys and other items for the orphans at the centre.

WHAT started out as a day of volunteering at a newly-formed NPO, The Benjamin Generation in New Hanover in the Midlands, blossomed into a donation collection mission for Durban North resident, Jodie-Lee Donnison.

The Benjamin Generation is a church-based project that strives to provide homes for abandoned, abused and HIV and Aids-affected children.

From 1 November, the group of passionate volunteers will provide foster homes to 24 children.

“My boyfriend and I volunteered on the day to help paint. But by the end of it I was blown away by the passion and dedication of the two organisers, Adrian and Ginny Barnard. They gave up their jobs to create this self-sustainable home,” said Donnison.

The 22-year-old then decided to initiate a toy collection project for the NPO.

“I have always been passionate about children and have assisted various organisations and volunteered at baby homes. Now I have the opportunity to help these children and watch them and the organisation grow,” she said.

Donnison appealed to the community to donate anything from toys to sports equipment to unwanted home objects, such as appliances, furniture or clothes.
