Gymnasts delve into the exciting world of acrobatics

Read up on the relatively unknown world of gymnastic acrobatics and the Integrated Artistic Acrobatic Association of South Africa Festival to be held at Durban North College from 5 to 10 October.

FOR most, the word ‘acrobatics’ immediately conjures up images of nimble tightrope artists or daring trapeze artists, perfectly executing dangerous aerial tricks.

However, Durban North’s acrobatics gymnasts, Megan and Louise Hadden, have no intention to join the circus. The siblings fell in love with the sport, known as ‘acro’, at the tender ages of four and six.

Acro is a competitive gymnastic discipline that combines acrobatic moves with various forms of dance, including modern and even hip-hop, explained 19-year-old Louise.

Next year in January, the sisters are planning on taking their teacher’s exam, which will qualify them to teach other eager enthusiasts. They are also both accounting students.

For now, however, the duo, along with fellow Durban North resident, Shirees Pretorius (10), will be competing in the Integrated Artistic Acrobatic Association of South Africa Festival 2015 to be held at the Durban North College from 5 to 10 October.

Hundreds of acrobats from across South Africa will be competing in the hopes of earning their national colours, medallions and/or trophies.

The event is organised by Durban North acro teacher, Anwyn Winterbach. According to the former acro student, the sport requires discipline and dedication.

“As fun and exciting as the sport is, it is also a physically demanding sport which requires some dedication. At the same time, acrobatics also helps with flexibility, co-ordination and, most importantly, a major boost in confidence,” she added.
